New Flying Mounts in WotLK
Just a quick bit of news - Blizzard poster Bornakk confirmed that new types of flying mounts will be available in Wrath of the Lich King expansion:
We currently have no plans to add another tier of riding skill in Wrath of the Lich King, but we do plan to add more kinds of mounts to the game. We’ll let you know what kinds when things get closer to launching the expansion.

Death Knight Overview
I just noticed the Wrath of the Lich King page on Wikipedia where they have a nice overview of the new Death Knight hero class. No new information that can’t be found on other posts here, but their entry gives a nice summary of what we know so far.
The Death Knight is the first announced Hero class for World of Warcraft. Death Knights, according to Blizzard developers, will be able to fulfill the tank and DPS roles efficiently. Death Knights can use plate armor and new rune weapons like Runeswords and Runeaxes, but they cannot use shields. They will have summon abilities which resemble those of the Warlock. According to an interview, a Death Knight’s summoned pets will be more similar to a Priest’s Shadowfiend or Mage’s Water Elemental in that they are pets with a set duration. The Death Knight is not considered a pet class because of this.

Death Knight Q&A
World of Warcraft poster Bornakk recently answered a few Death Knight questions on the official WoW forums:
Question: Everyone will roll death knight alts because they startat lvl 60, so they have less work to do.
Bornakk: We do hope a lot of people try out the class, it should be a lot of fun. But we also know that people have their preferred style of play so we don’t expect everybody to drop their current character(s) and play the Death Knight exclusively.
Question: It forces you to master a class in high-level areas where you need to know your class to suceed, and most new Death knights won’t know how to play their class at all.
Bornakk: Just leveling up to reach Northrend will take time and should provide players some great experience in learning the new class.
Question: You will get less hours out of your death knight alt.
Bornakk: I’m a little confused here, but are you saying that it’s a problem that you can’t spend more hours at lower levels?

First Instance Map - Utgarde Keep
Games for Windows published an early map of Utgarde Keep, the first instance in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.
Unfortunately the map is a little empty but the folks at WoW Insider did a little research and filled in some of the (potential) details and encounters based on what they saw at BlizzCon and from other news from around the net.
Definitely worth a look.

November 2008 Release Date?
If you take a look at the EB Games entry for Wrath of the Lich King you’ll see a 11/3/08 release date all but confirming that the expansion won’t be released for at least a year. Although I wasn’t expecting a Christmas 2007 release I am a little surprised that the projected release date is over a year away.
On the World of Warcraft forums Blizzard poster Nethaera commented that this isn’t an official date yet and that they’ll be announcing an official release date on once one has been established:
We haven’t announced a release date as of yet. When we do, you’ll see it up on the official web site here. Retailers have to put some sort of a release date in order to list a game for sale and accept pre-sales for those games. When they do put down a date, it’s generally an educated guess.

UI and Bag Changes on the Way?
There’s been some talk on the WoW forums requesting and suggesting user interface (UI) and bag changes be implemented in Wrath of the Lich King.
Blizzard poster Salthem wrote that it’s still too early to say if there will be any changes but not to expect a major UI overhaul since their history has been to make only gradual changes to the existing interface:
There are a lot of players who are used to the standard interface and changing it dramatically overnight would be unfair to them. If players want a completely different interface there will always be add-ons to accommodate that.

Lich King Beta Keys
One of the bonuses attendees at last month’s BlizzCon received was a beta key for an unnamed future Blizzard project. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about what game these beta keys are going to be for. Blizzard also announced Starcraft II at BlizzCon and has an un-named project in the works (code named Hydra) that makes for three potential betas.
Blizzard forum poster Nethaera asserted that they’re still not sure for which project the beta keys can be used but the important thing for the rest of us is that the beta keys from BlizzCon aren’t the only way to get into any potential Wrath of the Lich King beta:

Woodworking in WotLK?
There’s been a lot of talk on the World of Warcraft forums about whether woodworking would appear as a profession in the Wrath of the Lich King Expansion. Well, WoW poster Nethaera had this to say recently:
It’s definitely in consideration for the future, but for Wrath of the Lich King, we are focusing on Inscription as the next new profession.
When asked why only one profession per expansion, Nethaera responded:
We’re never short on ideas. We have many that we would like to implement, but implementing them isn’t always such a simple task.
For a new profession you need to consider:
How it will work?
Where will the recipes come from and where in the world will they be placed?
Who will the trainers be and what is their story?
What recipes are necessary and what materials are required for them?
What exactly will be the result of the profession as far as stat changes and enhancements be?
What art assets are going to be needed?
What technology will support it on the back end?
Why will people want it?
Is it ultimately fun and interesting? And many more things. Then in the end, it must balance out with the rest of the game as well as with other professions. Combine that with all the other things we are working on for Wrath of the Lich King and it isn’t something we can just toss together overnight.
So, it looks like we won’t see woodworking until expansion three…

Possible WotLK Release Date?
More news from an EU forum, this time from Denmark.
I have a friend who works in a media agency that handles banner advertisements for various larger portals in Denmark.
He has informed me that they have gotten an inquiry regarding the launch of WotLK in Denmark and running advertisements on Danish sites from the 1st of November until December 24th.
He also says that the expansion is slated to be in store shelves somewhere close to Christmas 2007, with the latest release as late as February 2008.
Of course this is all conjecture (I personally think Spring 2008) but I’ll keep you posted.
