Flying Mounts in Northrend
Filed Under Gameplay | Leave a Comment
More from a recent interview with Blizzard’s Tom Chilton - this time about flying mounts in Northrend:
“We’re still discussing how (flying mounts) are going to work - we’re not sure if you’ll actually be able to use your flying mount right away. You might have to earn your ‘Northrend flying badge’ at a later level…learn how to defrost the wings, ya know? And whaddya know, you can only do that at, oh, level 78.”
While denying a privilege (even for a little while) that took some folks — especially those who dropped a small fortune on epic flyers — months to earn will undoubtedly outrage some players, for the designers, it’s a necessary evil.

UI and Bag Changes on the Way?
Filed Under Gameplay | Leave a Comment
There’s been some talk on the WoW forums requesting and suggesting user interface (UI) and bag changes be implemented in Wrath of the Lich King.
Blizzard poster Salthem wrote that it’s still too early to say if there will be any changes but not to expect a major UI overhaul since their history has been to make only gradual changes to the existing interface:
There are a lot of players who are used to the standard interface and changing it dramatically overnight would be unfair to them. If players want a completely different interface there will always be add-ons to accommodate that.

Woodworking in WotLK?
Filed Under Gameplay | Leave a Comment
There’s been a lot of talk on the World of Warcraft forums about whether woodworking would appear as a profession in the Wrath of the Lich King Expansion. Well, WoW poster Nethaera had this to say recently:
It’s definitely in consideration for the future, but for Wrath of the Lich King, we are focusing on Inscription as the next new profession.
When asked why only one profession per expansion, Nethaera responded:
We’re never short on ideas. We have many that we would like to implement, but implementing them isn’t always such a simple task.
For a new profession you need to consider:
How it will work?
Where will the recipes come from and where in the world will they be placed?
Who will the trainers be and what is their story?
What recipes are necessary and what materials are required for them?
What exactly will be the result of the profession as far as stat changes and enhancements be?
What art assets are going to be needed?
What technology will support it on the back end?
Why will people want it?
Is it ultimately fun and interesting? And many more things. Then in the end, it must balance out with the rest of the game as well as with other professions. Combine that with all the other things we are working on for Wrath of the Lich King and it isn’t something we can just toss together overnight.
So, it looks like we won’t see woodworking until expansion three…

Wrath of the Lich King Hands On
Filed Under Gameplay | Leave a Comment
With over nine million subscribers it hardly seems necessary to retain players by releasing an expansion but that hasn’t stopped Blizzard from developing Wrath of the Lich King, a high-level expansion that opens up new areas for veteran players, both in terms of the new geography of Northrend as well as the new level cap and a brand new hero class. We’ve already covered most of these details in our recent BlizzCon updates but there were a few new bits of information worth passing along.
